Just west of Aireys Inlet the long sweep of Fairhaven Beach begins. The Surf Life Saving Club is at the eastern end of the beach where the surfing is at its best. The Great Ocean Road follows the beach for almost 6 kilometres to Eastern View, before climbing into the forest towards Lorne. A little more than half way along this stretch is the Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch, commemorating the construction of the road to those who lost their lives during World War One.
Though there is quite a lot of housing in the hinterland most is not visible from the Great Ocean Road or the beaches. Some rather spectacular dwellings are perched along the hilltops, none more so that the ‘house on a pole’ shown in our pictures.Tweet
