The Coonawarra wine region lies immediately north of the town of Penola.  The most sought after wine variety is cabernet sauvignon, grown in the famous terra rossa soil since the 1890’s, though other varieties also thrive here.  The terra ross a soil covers just 15 mms by 2 kms, so the regions wineries are clustered in a short drive from Penola.  There are more than 30 wineries in the region, most with cellar doors open to the public and several with restaurants. There is a smattering of accommodation associated with wineries and several independent accommodation providers.
