If it is close to lunchtime the highly rated A la Grecque restaurant on The Great Ocean Road serves wonderful seafood and quality produce in a relaxed inside/outside setting. The owners have a richly deserved reputation for excellence over many years along this coast.
In 2012 the description below from The Age Oct 2005 remains true
“One waiter is jogging as he carries out plates of fried calamari with shiny aioli and rocket. Two others, young, jethaired and olive-skinned, call to each other across the lawn in Greek.
We take the last remaining table in the courtyard and pick up a menu spiced with words such as pastourmas, taramosalata, kasseri, keftethes and latholemono.
Situated in Aireys Inlet the ocean, though visible only in glimpses from our table, is not far away. Even the weather is Greek. Welcome back, Kosta Talihmanidis.
The restaurateur who ran the legendary Kosta’s in Lorne for 27 years is once again doing what he was born to do: running a lively, informal, immensely appealing restaurant that captures the spirit and sensuality of his homeland, minus the cliches.
There are no blue-and-white walls or nautical props at A La Grecque. The food is not an endless parade of dips and meat on sticks. There is no bouzouki music.
As good and fun as Melbourne’s Greek tavernas are, it’s stimulating to be at a place that takes a more contemporary, Australian approach.”Tweet
